Without going as far as haute couture, everyone is free to take a thread and a needle to sew. Couture is a discreet but present market. When fashion generates more than 800,000 jobs in the country for 150 billion euros of direct turnover, the sector weighs heavily on the French economy. And despite increased international competition, fashion remains a “Made In France” cultural institution. There are now a dozen Maisons authorized to use the Haute Couture label. They are world famous and represent the showcase of fashion. They are mainly located in Paris but achieve between 70 and 80% of their turnover abroad. This sector is generally unprofitable given the very high costs of raw materials and processing. Also, many fashion houses are also developing derivative products, accessories and ready-to-wear.
